Spirituel branding i praksis

Foto @ladoublej Instagram

Spirituel Branding er oversættelse af energi

På den måde illustrerer La Double J what it is all about.

Whaaat! For ti år siden ville historien stoppe her.

Nej, not at all.

Foto via: www.cfda.com

En ændret forbrugerindstilling

I begyndelsen af 2000 sad størstedelen af alle unge kvinder og så med, når TV serien ”Sex and the city” rullede over skærmen. I et af de ikoniske afsnit, fremviser Samantha stolt sin nye fake Fendi taske -til stor forargelse for resten af veninderne: ”I don´t like fakes” siger Carrie, hvortil Samantha svarer: ”Who cares. All that matters is how it looks like”.

Ingen menneskelige forstyrrelser i nærheden. Foto: Pinterest.

Manglende ligestilling i soveværelset

I 2017 skrev psykologiprofessor Laurie Mintz bogen ”Becoming cliterate -Why orgasm equality matters and how to get it”.

“Becoming cliterate -Why Orgasm Equality Matters And How to Get It af: Laurie Minzt.

Indiske Joan of Arc – Lakshmibai

If you have been active on social media lately, you have probably seen the pictures of a shiny geomtrical object placed in the middle of the dessert in Utah. The conspiracy theories have begun and it might be a sign of a changed mindset. So let´s take a look at how pandemics change consumerbehaviour.

Why we love conspiracy theories

Conspiracy theories have always existed. You might remember theories about the assasination of John. F. Kennedy, 9/11, UFOs, the fact that Hitler and Elvis should be alive and now -that the metal object in the dessert is placed by aliens. Conspiracy theories are fun to hear about, but lately they have become more than fun for a huge group of people. With the internet and its algorithms we sometimes end up in a rabbit hole, where everything we look for seem to be connected. In other words; we get the information we seek. This is ofcourse something we should all be aware of.

The interesting thing is however, why people are becomming so interested in conspiracy theories -and what it acutally tell us about the consumer of today.

An anxious brain will seek for answers

When we are in the middle of a pandemic, which is the situation right now, people will get anxious. When we get anxiuos our brain is programmed to relieve this pressure and get us into a more balanced state of mind. Our way to get to this point of relieve is by filling in the gaps. When we enter a time of stress, terror og trauma -we will seek answers immidiately. We will try to find meaning, which we earlier found through religion and science, but after Trump, we have experienced that not even science can be trusted anymore (for those who believe in Trump). This take us to a place and a state of a complete meaningless order and society. Which is scary for most of us.

Humanbehaviour affect consumerbehaviour

We are all humans -and this humanbehaviour will affect our consumerbehaviour. Right now (during Covid-19) we will experience an anxious consumer who is less open towards new ideas and products -and at the same time -more critical of things.

How to approach the anxious consumer

When we want to approach the anxious consumer, we have to understand that a humanbeing in an anxious state of mind will not try to add more into his or her life. Instead they will try to hold on to what they already have. This means your approach as a brand and a company should change as well. Don´t focus on how to add more to your customers life -focus on how to help the customer keep the looks, energy, confidence, time or control etc. The product or service is the same, but the approach is changed.

And when that is said, this is the time for brands to listen, be honest, be vulnerable, reach out and connect. Eventhough we are in a time of crisis, this crisis also open up for new opportunities.

Patagonia, Michael Kors and American Eagle encourage consumers to vote, but what does that mean? Are fashionbrands ready to enter the world of politics, or are they playing with fire?

“Vote the assholes out”

If you have been drifting around on social media the last couple of weeks, you have probably seen Patagonias tags, which very clearly encourage their consumers to vote -and not only vote, but “vote the assholes out”. The message is directed towards politicians, who deny climate change. By sharing this message Patagonia tells the world how dedicated they are, when it comes to Nature. But is it a good thing to mix fashion and politics?

That is the question -so let´s find out.

Brands close offices on election day

Patagonia is not the only brand who have suggested consumers that it is important to vote. Brands as Michael Kors and Ameraican Eagle has both created T-shirts with strong messages printet on the chest. Other brands, such as Birkenstock, Steve Madden and Nike all close their office on election day, so employees have time to enter the polls.

Social activism attract young consumers

There are different ways to show, that you as a brand want people to vote and this trend is growing bigger the closer we get to election day. Why? offcourse it is free PR and the story is interesting, but it is also a sign of a new era, where brands involve in social activism in an extend we have never seen before. The younger generation is more involved in social activism and they have an awareness about climate change, which prior generations have never had. Just take a look at Greta Thunberg. She is a living example of the young and dedicated citizen, who wants to fight for a better world.

Politics can be a danger-zone to enter

Branding yourself as a social activist brand will without a doubt attract young consumers, but it is also a challenging strategy if you want to have a broad consumer range. Politics can be a dangerous area to get involved with. How you vote is for most people a very personal matter, and it is something many of us will never revael to neither friends nor family. As we know politics can divide. So do fashionbrands dare to take the step and enter the world of politics?

An access to a whole new generation

Patagonia show their concern for the planet, which is a pretty “safe move”, because of their position as an outdoor brand. This shows us, that it IS possible to get involved in politics as a fashionbrand, but we have to be carefull. One thing is to encourage for a better world. It is something completely else to encourage to vote for higher/lower tax, healthcare or abortion. In other words: Politics is still a challenging area to enter, but not impossible at all. And if you do it right; you can enter the lives of a whole new generation!

Our society is changing as never before. It started with #metoo, #lgbt, and #bodyactivism and now we have #blacklivesmatter. What was ok yesterday, is no longer ok. So how do we act as a brand in times of structural change? I have written some thoughts about this important challenge, so let´s dig in:-)

#BLM -how do we behave as a brand?

Some weeks ago it all began. More and more people understood that something wrong was going on -and we had to act. But what to do? As a brand you are not only a rolemodel for thousands of people, you are also a religion. A religion who show their consumers how to feel, act and behave. Many brands immediately joined “blackout tuesday” through the black box post in their social media feed (mostly Instagram). But is that enough? And if not; what is the next step?

As the days went by I observed the reactions on social media, which was very interesting. For all of the brands not posting anything, the reaction was: “Do not ignore this. Do not silence this”. But for the brands posting a black box in their feed, they also got some negative reactions, telling the brand that it isn´t enough just to post a black box -you have to take action. Suddenly the talk was about #blackwashing, which we have seen before with #greenwashing and during pride, where big companies suddenly join pride (in a not so convincing matter)…

Some people have made fun of the way people in fashion reacted towards #blm.

You thought you did the right thing….

As a brand you want to do the “right thing”. You don´t want to loose customers and you don´t want to set a bad example. But that can be difficult in a situation like #blm. As I mentioned above, some people don´t think it is enough with a black box. Others don´t think it is ok to ask the black community about what to do, and some people wants brands to apologize for earlier mistakes concerning their attitude and actions towards black people. So it almost seem as if it is impossible to act and behave 100% correct. Even members of the black community seem to disagree about the “ideal behavior”. So what do we do?

Insecure or paralyzed?

Suddenly all eyes are on you and your brand. Every step you take will be noticed (because we all follow you via social media). So what do you do? Many brands become insecure and paralyzed in situations like this. They don´t want to take a step in the wrong direction. But to stop all communication is not the answer. As a brand you are a leader, and with great leaders comes great responsibility. Therefore we all have to find out where we stand and communicate very clearly about this.

3 simple advice on what to do and how to act

Treat people like you want to be treaten. It might sound simple, but it is very underestimated. Treat others with respect -always! Include as many as possible, instead of leaving groups behind. If you sell a product, think about how this product fits as many different people and social groups as possible.

Be nuanced. Look at the situation from different angles and perspectives. Try to imagine the life of other groups than your own. Talk with people who are not like you. Understand what is going on.

Be a clear and sympathetic leader. If you don´t have it already; create a clear politic around your values: what do you think about the different challenges and how do you want to approach them? Be consistent (don´t take a step and appologize five minutes later). Think innovative. We are creating the future every day. Understand the impact we have as a brand. We can change things to the better as a brand. Take responsibility and set an example. True leaders (and brands) of the future are not passive “safe” followers. Instead they take a stand and speak out.

“But we are just a brand… I mean -we only do fashion…..”

No brand is “just a brand”. A brand is modern times religion. It is where we, as consumer, find meaning. We find values, and we try to live as the brand shows us. A brand is an illusion of a world. How we dream about living and what our deepest desires consist of. Consumers use brands as navigation and identification. They mirror themselves in seleceted brands. Every brand therefore have a responsibility. To be a leader -who can lead people in the right direction. Within the huge variety of brands there will (of course) be different approaches on how to deal with change and challenges. The important thing is to understand the role of the brand, the impact of the brand and the time we live in.

I hope it made sense, otherwise -never hesitate to contact me if you want me to explain or help:-)

Love Manou.

To be honest -this headline was a struggle (and still is). Because how do you show that sound is the next big thing, that it can uplift any brand (especially within fashion) and at the same time give a glimpse of all the science behind sound? Argh -not easy! But no matter if the headline works or not -let´s find out why sound is so fxxxxx awesome and why we can´t overlook it (or should I say “overhear” it, ha ha -there are so many jokes when it comes to the science of senses – I am sorry in advance)!

The power of sound

Ever since I experienced sound expert Julian Treasure at a conference last year -I have been obsessed by sound. Sound is everywhere around us, but we don´t pay attention to it and worst of all; we are not aware of its tremendous power! Just think about how music can make you feel. It can change your mood completely and it can give information about any object without even seeing it (just try to think of a phone ringing -without seeing a phone in front of you…) And that is exactly what sound is capable of: interacting with your inner and outer being, and then things starts to become interesting….

How sound affects us

Sound can change the way we behave! If you hear a very annoying sound, you want to remove yourself from the sound. On the other hand -a very pleasant sound will be able to attract your attention and create a desire to move closer to the sound. Sounds can be constructive, but also destructive.

Sounds can be constructive, but also destructive!

If you work in a company with an open office environment you will experience that productivity goes down 68% and if you play inappropriate music or sound in a retail store -sales will drop 28%! So this is obviously the downside of sound. That it becomes annoying and distracting. As a brand and business, we should be very aware of the sound-environment around us: At the office, in our shop or even in the queue waiting to get through to customer-service.

How to take advantage of sound as a brand

During the last decades focus has been on visual information, which means pictures, logos and everything around the visible side of your brand. But now it is time to focus on how your brand sounds. Our society has become more and more visual. And we have become more and more overwhelmed in the proces of scrolling 200 meters of social media feed everyday (I am exhausted just by writing this fact)! This make us turn towards sound. We want to be informed and entertained, but in a more pleasant and comfortable way. And the answer to this is sound.

As a brand you can use sound in many different ways. You can create a sound logo, also called a sonic logo or an audible logo. If you google Dell or Nokia -you will most likely recognize their sound logos. You can also think about the music played in your stores. Music is the most powerful sound that exist. Why? Because it triggers recognition and association, which is the two areas you would love to join if you are creating a brand you want to be remembered -anywhere and anytime!

Sonic logos

If you want the sound to be more personlized you can create music designed just for your brand and likewise -a brand voice. Sound can (and should be) an element that goes along and across your brand. Just like you think about, which campaign photos to use, sound should be an important part of your brand as well.

Society of sound

When our society developes into a more audio-driven society, it is crucial that brands fit in -in an audio world. Right now many brands sponsor podcast, but the only thing the potential customer hears is the host saying: “This episodes´sponsor is…bla bla bla” and that is not good enough. “Ads with music that fits the brand are 98% more likely to be remembered than those with non-fit music” (Sonicbranding by massiveMusic).

“Ads with music that fits the brand are 98% more likely to be remembered than those with non-fit music”

So if you want to play in an audio world -guess what, you have to think and be audio;-) Create a sound or some music that is your brand and share it in every imaginable context.

Sound is stronger than pictures

I am one of the biggest fans of pictures and visual images. It is so powerful when it comes to the art of building brands. But actually sound is even stronger. It can bring back memories and emotions, so you feel as if it happened a second ago. And that is powerful! We have 5 senses, but far from all senses are taken into consideration when we want to build a brand.

And that is a shame. I know that technology doesn´t allow us to smell or taste a brand through a smartphone yet, but I can imagine how amazing (and powerful) it will become. Many brands and retailers have opened their eyes towards the multi-sensory shopping experience and that is great. When we get more and more technology into our lives, we long for something less cold and metallic. We seek towards soft and comfortable experiences. Which actually leads me to my next point of view, about the benefits of sound.

Never forget the sound!

Sound affect us on several levels. It affects our hormones, our heartbeat, our breathing and it is able to change our mood. Sounds goes under our skin and it goes deep. If we listen to techno -we drive faster than if listening to classic music. Humans are such an amazing creature. If we understand how our surroundings affect us, we will be able to create perfect environments and the best conditions to thrive. This is especially important if you have a fashion brand and a brandstore. The sound of shopping in itself is actually quite annoying: The sound of hangers touching eachother, people discussing what to buy/what not to buy and clothes coming on and off. Sounds that can be annoying should be camoflaged at anytime. If you are not into music, consider sounds of nature like birds, waterfall or rain.

The future is audible

“If you are not audible in the future, you will be invisible” -according to sound expert Julian Treasure -and I actually believe he is right -to a certain extent. I would rather say, that sound have the ability to create a stronger brand-experience than anything else and that you should be aware of the possibilities to activate all senses. As technology moves on in its crazy pace forward, we, as humans, will have a need for the gentle touch through sound, smell, taste and touch. If brands are able to deliver this -branding will go to a whole new level. But to begin with, let´s try the sonic-branding and ask yourself: “How does your brand sound like”?….

Written by: Manou Messmann

I will begin this blog with a post about what to expect of 2015 concerning the way we dress, the way we decorate our homes and the way we love (and make love)!

FASHION:

When it comes to fashion, the past decade has showed us what is being called “democratic fashion”. Democratic fashion is not as political as it sounds, but is still about having a democratic approach to the way fashion is produced and consumed. Today fashion is being democratic because of:

The internet, which means that everyone with a computer and an internet connection has access to the latest fashiontrends. You can now be updated through Instagram, fashionblogs, online webshops or online fashion-magazines.

We can get this access 24-7 if we are carrying a smartphone or tablet.

Today it has also become much cheaper to be fashionable, because of high-street fashion, such as H&M, Zara, Topshop and ASOS.

And last but not least; The big fashion brands has started to use “everyday people” a lot more, when it comes to creating relevant design, which can be seen in the way fashionbloggers are implemented in the designprocess.

This democratic way of producing and consuming fashion has, of course, changed a lot in the world of fashion -and these changes will be increased in the years to come. One of the main areas this democratization has influenced, is our understanding of what´s “new” and the value of “new”. Many years ago it wasn´t everyone that had access to the information about what was new. Today we can all get it, which means it is no longer something exclusive or something for a small group of innovators (the people who creates the trends). And you can no longer stand out just by wearing something new, because is has already been shown to thousands of other fashion-consumers. So what do the fashion-consumer do to stand out, if it isn´t possible just by wearing new items? They do two things: They try to be more creative in their way of styling the different fashion items and they balance their way of dressing, so it gets as close as possible to what is being perceived as “ugly” by the mainstream group.

From www.sketch42blog.com

By dressing creative, it gets more difficult for other consumer groups to copy the look, and by dressing close to ugly, it isn´t everyone that dares to copy the look. So in 2015 focus will be a lot more on the unique styling of fashion -and how to stand out in a way, which makes other confused about whether or not it is fashion.

INTERIOR:

Our way of decorating our homes will also change dramatically in 2015. People are tired of the idea about the “perfect home” and have realized that it is more important to spend time with family and friends, rather on choosing matching fabrics for the livingroom. It is important to state though, that people will still use time on decorating their homes, they just don´t wan´t to send the message about it….

The way we can and will see unperfect decorated homes is through a more relaxed approach towards mess. Books, clothes and plants are no longer organized beautyfully, but is lying randomly in the home. People will be inspired of decorating their homes in a “Selby” way (www.theselby.com) and they will play a lot more with mixing up different types of interior.

From www.theselby.com

It is no longer important to chose which kind of interior style you like and then be loyal to the style. Now you can mix it all up and instead get an inspiring and personal home. So if you are into danish design from the 50s and 60s is, it becomes even more interesting if you dare to combine it with a leather couch from the 80s or 90s ! The style is definitely eclectic and is pushed to the max.

And why do we want to style our homes like this mess? Of course because of the earlier mentioned message about spending your time on what is really important, but also because you show the world that you have the balls to decorate your home exactly as you wish (even though you are still inspired of others…). You now decorate in a way most would people would call weird, but you are aware of what is really going on; you are creating your own personal universe of favorite interior design.

LOVE & SEX

And now to the naughty part. How will we love and make love in 2015?

Our traditional way of understanding love and relationships will open up in 2015. People are now ready for a more nuanced view on love. This trend and development is influenced by a holistic and spiritual way of living and can already be seen in groups of people who appreciate yoga, eat natural and are openminded towards alternative ways of living. This is said very “black and white”, and there is of course many people who is already practicing this new way of love, without doing yoga and eating green stuff.

The trend is basically about how to open up for love, and “the fact” that there is love enough for everybody. So if you are in a traditional relationship, there is a possibility to open up towards other people, without harming your primary relationship. This sounds provocative for most people, and will possibly lead to feelings of jealousy and unsecurity -but the idea behind this way of living can be compared with the love you have to your children. No matter how many children you have, you will love them all! The people who are living like this do not all have a perfect relationship, but they like the idea about setting each other free and they question why we have to live by some very strict rules instead of realizing that we can never own another human being.

From www.scienceofrelationships.com

As some people want to “let go” concerning their lovelife, some people will also be attracted of “letting go” in their sexual life. This development is a response to the highly controlled society we live in today. We are responsible for our own happiness and we constantly have to make sure that everything is working out for us 24-7, and not only in our physical life, but also on our online life through the social media. We have become very aware of ourselves; how we show who we are, both in text and through photos. This creates a desire to let go and get wild, without thinking about it. Just to be natural, be you without the extra reflective layer that is constantly lying in your consciousness.

How you can see this trend, is amongst others through the way people search, perform and consume sex. If we take the first one; how people search for sex, you will see that it is now “ok” to search for looks (Tinder, Grindr), for money (Sugardating) or for cheating (VictoriaMilan). People have become very purposive when it comes to the search for new sexual adventures, maybe because it is now possible to be specific about your needs. So people are now more open about fulfilling their needs and it is no longer weird if your friend tells you, he has been to a swinger club.

If we take a look at how people in the sex and porn-industry perform sex, there has definitely been a change during the last 40 years. The actors today are very aware of their performance, and often seem to pay more attention on how they look in front of the camera instead of looking like they actually enjoy what they are doing. If you look at a porn-movie from the 70s or 80s, you will notice that they are more present in the sexual act and doesn’t seem to pay attention to the way they look -not in same extend as can be seen today. This ability to be present and to enjoy the moment you are in is very difficult for most people today. This is because we have the extra reflective layer (how can this situation be showed on the social media) and because of the high level of control (I have to get the kids delivered before 8, so that I can get to work before…etc.). The interesting thing is, that porn-movies from the 70s and 80s are very popular on sites such as redtube and youporn. Maybe because people actually had the ability to have sex in a more intuitive and present way -like animals!…

From www.pix-good.com

The need and demand for more natural and intuitive sex can also be seen through the huge amount of articles about how the pubic hair(not so charming term) is coming back! If we take a look at the symbolic meaning of the hair we wear “downstairs”, we will see that the designed and shaved hair symbolizes a controlled body. On the other way around, the unshaved and hairy genitals symbolizes the uncontrolled, mysterious and more animal-like behavior.

So my predictions is that we will definitely see a more relaxed feeling and behavior when it comes to love and making love in the years to come.
